Bitterness or Blessings?

As I picked my hairbrush up off the vanity, a witch hazel pad stuck to it.

“Ugh! THIS is the stuff that drives ME crazy!” I thought the words to Francesca Battistelli’s song in response to my irritation.

And then another voice in my head piped up. The one that thinks things I wouldn’t say out loud. The one that tells the truth I really don’t want to hear.

No, this is the stuff that flat out pisses you off. It doesn’t drive you crazy.

Whoa. I had to stop.

That reaction was a bit extreme.

Wasn’t it?

Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice. Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you. Ephesians 4:31-32

Surely I couldn’t be bitter over someone leaving something on the vanity instead of throwing it away. Could I? That’s just ridiculous.

Then my mind traveled to cabinet doors left standing open, containers with liquid set in the floor, a lint trap that never seems to get emptied, and the fact that my local news has been filled with kids who have died in tragic accidents this week.

Mine are healthy. My kids get good grades in school. My kids make good decisions on their own about what is safe and what isn’t. My kids seek out ways to serve God.

And I’m wasting thoughts, wasting precious time, wasting emotion in a negative way because something got left on the vanity that should have been put in the trash?

I wonder how often we ignore the blessings and focus our time and energy on the annoyances.

We all have something to thank the Lord for every day. Need some examples? Check out Psalm 107.

“Let the one who is wise heed these things and ponder the loving deeds of the Lord.” Psalm 107:43

  1. Great blog post Carrie and so true. We all have a choice and which shall it be… 🙂 ❤

  2. I have just bookmarked your blog! 😉 You definitely address issues that matter to me and I can so relate to this post today!

Nearly every day, I read Psalms and Proverbs for the day, and a few devotional books. I post some verses and devotional “shares” on my Facebook page nearly daily, along with my “Attitude of Gratitude” posts that I've been doing for about 3 years now.

It really is so important to focus on things that are good, pure, and positive! Thanks for sharing!

  3. WHAM! Like a soft, gentle 2' x 4' to the head…thank you. This is exactly what I needed today.
