Breakin’ God Out of the Box

The Acts 2 Church

Acts 2:1-3 KJV And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.

Acts 4:31 KJV And when they had prayed, the place was shaken where they were assembled together; and they were all filled with the Holy Ghost and they spake the word of God with boldness.

I have spent most of my adult life fascinated by these scriptures. I read them frequently, I pray them more. I have written a song inspired by these words. I wonder in my prayer life what would happen if more of us sought whole-heartedly after this experience.

Think back to your most recent entrance into a worship service. What did you see? Were people sitting quietly in pews whispering to others around them? Was the congregation loud and boisterous, talking loudly across the sanctuary? Was a worship group on the platform leading early comers into a worship experience? What, truly, takes place in the congregation before it is called to order?

I have a continual prayer that I get even more serious about every Saturday. It is different each time, but it always goes something like this:

Daddy, I want to see You break out of the box we’ve put You in. I want to feel the wind of Your Spirit in our service as I watch the pastor’s tie flapping in the breeze. I want to see tongues of fire on the shoulders of those in our midst that are filled to overflowing with Your Spirit. I want to get drenched when the infilling pours out into our sanctuary…I want to sing, shout, cry, Lord, I want it all. I want to feel the earth shake…I want You to be truly known…to be seen in our midst…to break out…Lord, please, break out.

I wonder what would happen if we, like the apostles’, joined together in a prayer like this? Would we see the impossible? Would we see Jesus? Would our lives ever be the same again?

What do you think?

  1. Carrie, I for one would love to see the same, to feel the earth shake. I do feel a special presence when I enter my church, different from any other church doors I have entered. There are a few in the front with their arms and hands stretched up to the Lord in praise when we sing, but not many.

Many that need more than just faith to believe would finally know for sure at that point. I pray to know and feel His presence everywhere. Open the box, set Him free!

  2. Thank you for your response! I wrote on this scripture again today. I'm probably still not done. I really like this one. 🙂
